Facing a Defining September
London is preparing for an important week in luxury hospitality as the city welcomes Connections Luxury UK & Ireland from 20 to 23 September 2026.
The invitation-led event brings together leading luxury travel advisers from the United Kingdom and Ireland with international hotels, destinations and travel brands. Its programme is built around individual meetings and curated experiences rather than conventional exhibition stands, reflecting the increasingly relationship-driven nature of the high-end travel business.
The timing is particularly significant. British travellers remain one of the world’s most valuable sources of international luxury-tourism revenue, while hotels are competing for direct access to the advisers who influence where affluent clients stay, how long they travel and which experiences they choose.
The event arrives as London’s hospitality industry confronts a potentially consequential policy change. City authorities are considering the introduction of a visitor levy that could reach five per cent of the cost of a hotel stay.
The proposal has not yet been finalised, but it has already caused concern among hoteliers and tourism businesses. London accommodation is subject to a 20 per cent VAT rate, and international visitors can no longer benefit from tax-free retail shopping. An additional levy could therefore make the capital less competitive against other European luxury destinations.
Supporters argue that the revenue could help finance transport, public spaces and tourism infrastructure. The industry’s central question, however, is whether the benefits would compensate for the higher cost imposed on visitors.
London consequently enters the autumn season with both considerable commercial momentum and a new competitive challenge. Its hotels continue to attract global investment and affluent travellers, but the city must ensure that prestige is not mistaken for unlimited pricing power.
