ANNA HU

Composed in Jewels

In the world of haute joaillerie, few artists have devoted nearly two decades to exploring a single motif, transforming it into a distinctive and fully realised artistic language. For Anna Hu, that enduring motif is the butterfly.

THE BUTTERFLY UNIVERSE
Since founding her Maison in 2007, the butterfly has appeared throughout Anna Hu’s most significant creations. This seemingly delicate creature has gradually evolved beyond a decorative motif to become the defining symbol that runs throughout her artistic universe.
In Anna Hu’s creations, the butterfly symbolises far more than beauty. It represents freedom, transformation, the eternal cycle of life, and the quiet resilience of women. Its inspiration may arise from the lyrical melodies of classical music or from Eastern philosophy’s contemplation of time and the natural world.

Over the years, the butterfly has accompanied Anna Hu on her creative journey – from Fifth Avenue in New York to Place Vendôme in
Paris, and from Monte Carlo to some of the world’s most prestigious stages. Along the way, it has become one of the defining symbols of her artistic universe. That remarkable journey began with one iconic creation: Mirage Butterfly.

MIRAGE BUTTERFLY
As the cover piece for this special feature, the Mirage Butterfly Ring/Brooch is one of the most iconic works in Anna Hu’s Butterfly Universe. It embodies nearly two decades of artistic exploration inspired by the butterfly, where nature, art and the craftsmanship of haute joaillerie converge in poetic harmony.
Inspired by the rare Asian butterfly known as the “Dream Butterfly”, the design captures the graceful symmetry and elongated silhouette of its wings. Anna transforms nature’s innate sense of order into an artistic composition, seamlessly intertwining it with the structural beauty of classical music to create a work that balances emotion with precision. Johann Sebastian Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier served as a key source of inspiration. Layers of mother-of-pearl, pigeon blood rubies and brilliant-cut diamonds create a rich visual rhythm that unfolds like a musical composition through shifting light. Designed to be worn as both a ring and a brooch, the piece reflects Anna Hu’s enduring pursuit of artistic expression and exceptional craftsmanship.

METAMORPHOSIS BUTTERFLY
If Mirage Butterfly symbolises the beginning of a dream, then the Metamorphosis Butterfly Bracelet tells the story of transformation. Inspired by the butterfly’s life cycle – from caterpillar to chrysalis and finally to butterfly – the piece reflects one of the central themes of Anna Hu’s artistic journey. Created to commemorate the Maison’s fifteenth anniversary in collaboration with the legendary diamond house Moussaieff, the bracelet features a remarkable 35.40-carat marquise-cut Moussaieff diamond surrounded by more than a thousand vibrant gemstones. Inspired by Mozart’s Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star Variations, it has become one of the most iconic creations in Anna Hu’s Butterfly Universe.

MUSICAL BUTTERFLY COLLECTION
Music has always been the key to understanding Anna Hu’s creative world. Before becoming a haute joaillerie artist, she was a gifted professional cellist who received numerous top prizes in international classical music competitions. A severe shoulder injury ultimately brought her performing career to an end, leading her to devote herself entirely to the art of jewellery. Although her path changed, music has remained at the heart of her creative language. Introduced in 2015, the Musical Butterfly Collection brings together music, nature and Eastern philosophy through the butterfly motif. To Anna Hu, composing a jewel is much like composing music – each butterfly becomes an individual movement, together creating a visual symphony that transcends cultures, disciplines and time.

THE ART OF THE BUTTERFLY
Anna‘s butterfly creations were inspired by the rich cultural heritage of both East and West, as well as her profound appreciation for the vitality of nature. By weaving together mythology, philosophy, and natural imagery, she transforms the butterfly into more than a symbol of the natural world—it becomes a timeless embodiment of art, life, and civilization. This everlasting union is destined to inspire people for generations to come.

LE PAPILLON
Paris has long been the global capital of haute joaillerie and haute couture – the epitome of artistic excellence and timeless elegance.
It is within this inspiring cultural landscape that the Le Papillon Collection was born. In French, papillon means butterfly; for Anna Hu, it is a timeless symbol that connects cultures, art and life itself.
Inspired by the vitality of nature and the craftsmanship of haute joaillerie, the collection captures the butterfly’s elegance through light, fluid lines. The enduring spirit of Place Vendôme continues to shape Anna Hu’s creative vision.

DANCE OF BUTTERFLY
Nature has always been one of Anna Hu’s greatest sources of inspiration. In the Dance of Butterfly Collection, she turns to the Eastern philosophy of time, using the butterfly to express the poetic rhythm of the changing seasons and the continuous cycle of life.
Inspired by the Twenty-Four Solar Terms, a traditional Chinese calendar that reflects humanity’s close relationship with nature, Anna Hu transforms the subtle transitions of the seasons into the language of haute joaillerie. Through a harmonious interplay of coloured gemstones, Eastern philosophy and French haute joaillerie craftsmanship, each creation becomes a poetic celebration of time, nature and the beauty of life.

THE BUTTERFLY LEGACY
Over the years, ANNA HU’s haute joaillerie creations have entered the collections of some of the world’s most prestigious cultural institutions, including the Moscow Kremlin State Historical Museum, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the British Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Since the founding of the Maison in 2007, the butterfly has evolved from an early source of inspiration into one of Anna Hu’s most distinctive artistic languages.
This Butterfly Universe – built over nearly two decades of imagination, craftsmanship and cultural dialogue – continues to spread its wings towards the future.
