YASYA MINOCHKINA SS’27

“LA MAGNOLIA” at Monte-Carlo Fashion Week
On 18 April, at the Grimaldi Forum, the Yasya Minochkina brand presented “La Magnolia” as part of Monte-Carlo Fashion Week – the first public show in years, and the first to unfold here, in the place where, for fifteen years, everything that matters has quietly been: the atelier, the office, the family, the life.

Yasya Minochkina
The Yasya Minochkina brand was founded in 2009. Yasya Minochkina studied in Antwerp and London – a foundation that shaped both the precision of her construction and her ease within the international fashion system. In the years since: shows in New York, London and Paris; a 2015 LVMH Prize nomination, naming Minochkina one of the thirty most promising young designers in the world; collaborations with Chopard, Bvlgari and Jacob & Co.; dresses worn by Kim Kardashian; and the attention of Anna Wintour. Her work brought her to Italy through Vogue Talents and Sara Maino, who presented the brand in Milan. She later became the face of campaigns for Garnier and L’Oréal.
A closed défilé during the Monaco Grand Prix – an event where speed and luxury exist within the same frame – was one of the brand’s last public appearances before today’s show. Throughout, the brand never stopped working – through partner boutiques, bespoke orders, and loyal clients who return every season. The runway was waiting for the right moment and the right place. Both arrived at once.
Yasya Minochkina is back on the runway – and she chose to do so on her own terms, in her own city. Some comebacks demand explanation. This one arrives the way a magnolia does in April: unhurried, inevitable, and spectacularly indifferent to justification.

The Collection
Thirty-five looks. Not one of them is anything other than a dress – no compromises. Only the silhouette that Yasya Minochkina has long considered her singular language: fluid silk against a couture corset, weightless volume against dense hand embroidery. This is not an arbitrary choice. Monaco is one of the few places in the world where ball culture exists not as an anachronism but as a living tradition. Princesses, society women, guests of the Grand Prix and the Cannes Film Festival – here, a couture gown remains not a costume but a statement. Yasya Minochkina has spent fifteen years within this culture, dressing its participants – and “La Magnolia” is, in many ways, a tribute to this particular way of life, where ballroom etiquette and Mediterranean ease share the same wardrobe.

The fabrics for “La Magnolia” were created over six months – long before the collection had taken shape. Good fabrics do not wait for inspiration. They anticipate it. From a nude mesh gown traced with hand-embroidered sequin florals to a white chiffon dress with cascading ruffles and a scattered rose print, “La Magnolia” moves between botanical reverie and evening ceremony with equal ease. A blush strapless cocktail dress outlined in pearls and a black sheer column encrusted with three-dimensional fabric flowers offer two interpretations of the same romanticism – one intimate, one architectural – while a crimson gown, its rhinestone-set bodice dissolving into a sweep of ostrich feathers, closes the sequence as the collection’s most theatrical and defining statement. Each piece reflects Yasya Minochkina’s uncompromising devotion to handcraft and her vision of dressing as transformation.

The through-line is the magnolia. Not as a decorative device, but as chronology: the blooming season in Monaco coincided precisely with the making of the collection. Floral prints, embroidered petals, shades rich and alive – the palette of someone who looks at these flowers every morning from her window and never tires of them.
“Monte-Carlo is not a location I chose for a show. It is a place that chose me, fifteen years ago, and I have not been able to imagine myself anywhere else since. My family is here. My office, my atelier, my clients – women I pass on the promenade and see again at balls. I see magnolias every morning and hear the sea every evening. I spent a long time thinking about where the brand should reappear. And at some point I understood: the answer had always been here. The Grimaldi Forum is one of the most beautiful and significant venues in Europe. Opera, ballet, and international exhibitions take place here. And now – great fashion.

Monte-Carlo Fashion Week is not simply a fashion week for me. It is a chance to show a collection to the people it was made for. My clients are here. My way of life is here. Everything that inspires me every day – flowers, the sea, balls, princesses, yachts on the horizon – it is all here. And beyond the glamour, Monte Carlo is quietly one of the most artistic places in the world. Galleries, exhibitions, creators who have made this place their permanent muse. It draws people who think in images and live through beauty. I hope to be part of this event every year. Because Monte-Carlo is not just my home. It is my context.”

Inspiration
The “La Magnolia” mood board is a biography of a place, read through images. Her Majesty Grace Kelly in her official portrait: a textured white gown, a tiara, an order’s sash – a woman who contained, in a single image, a state, impeccable taste, and something ineffably personal. She opened Monaco to the world not as a territory but as an idea. Princesses Stéphanie and Caroline at yet another gala – turquoise and lace against lavender chiffon, glamour as a way of being rather than an effort. And Her Serene Highness Princess Charlène in a fuchsia corset gown, in her first dance with Prince Albert: the moment when couture stops being clothing and becomes an event. Minochkina already dresses many participants of this Monegasque ballet – and makes no secret of the fact that Princess Charlène remains on her wish list: not as an unreachable dream, but as the next chapter.

Alongside the Monegasque chronicle – cinema. Wong Kar-wai’s In the Mood for Love: Maggie Cheung changes through a succession of floral cheongsams as though shifting emotional states, and each dress says what words cannot. And painting – abstract, dense, almost tactile: in Michael De Feo’s work, flowers do not adorn a woman, they become part of her – growing into her face, her silhouette, her identity. This is precisely how Minochkina understands the floral motif: not as decoration, but as language.
“Life is too short to postpone beautiful dresses. The fabrics for this collection began to be made almost six months before I told myself – this is ‘La Magnolia’. They simply lay there, waiting. Four months of hand embroidery – that is not production, it is meditation. Every stitch is made with the understanding that it will be seen. That someone will look at it up close. That the woman wearing this dress will feel its weight and understand how much work lives within it.
This collection is romantic – but not soft in a passive way. It is romantic and sensual at once. Delicate fabrics – silk chiffon, organza, the finest tulles – are cut to reveal as much as they conceal. Tenderness and sensuality are not opposites here. They are the same gesture.

I do not separate couture from lightness – for me they are one story. Silk that floats can be just as complex to produce as a boned corset. One simply speaks quietly, the other loudly. ‘La Magnolia’ contains both, because Monaco is a place where in the morning you walk for coffee in a light dress, and in the evening you wear the same silk to a ball. That is not a contradiction. That is what true luxury is – when one piece lives several lives at once.
For me, couture is not about inaccessibility. It is about respect. For the fabric, for the woman, for the time invested in every centimetre. That is what I want every woman who wears a dress from this collection to feel.”
